What is LASIK Surgery?
LASIK is a surgical procedure that will improve your vision. Individuals who wear eyeglasses and contact lenses have a misshaped cornea which causes the light to bend incorrectly onto the back of your corneal, which results in a blurred image. The bending of the light is similar to a lens of a camera. The lens focuses light to create an image on film. LASIK surgery reshapes the corneal so your eye will focus light properly onto your retina reducing your dependency on eyeglasses, and / or contact lenses and may even eliminate the need for eyeglasses, and / or contacts lenses.
What can I Expect from my LASIK Consultation?
A technician meet with you and review your health and medical history. We will measure your eyes using wavefront technology, called CustomVue. The wavefront technology will confirm whether you are nearsighted, farsighted and/or have astigmatism.
After the technician, Dr. Lin will meet with you. He will examine your eyes thoroughly to ensure your eyes are healthy. There must be no ocular health problems present, such as cataracts or untreated glaucoma.
Additional diagnostic testing will be performed to measure the amount of nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism, pupil size, and the thickness and detailed shape of the cornea. The whole LASIK exam will be about 45 mins to an hour.
During the consultation, Dr. Lin will answer all of your questions and concerns about LASIK. We can also discuss finance options. Many individuals use CareCredit to as a payment option.
What happens during LASIK Surgery?
Before LASIK Eye Surgery
On the day of your surgery plan on eating normally and taking your regular medications. LASIK surgery is an ambulatory procedure which means you’ll walk into the surgery center, have the procedure, and then walk out again. We request that you arranged for someone to drive you home after the procedure. Please dress comfortably so that afterward you can go home and rest.
During LASIK Surgery
The actual surgery usually takes less than 15 minutes for both eyes. But expect to be the surgery center for an hour or more. Your eyes are numbed with eye drops and you may be given an oral medication to take to relax your body. No needles are used. Body movements will not affect the procedure, and your eye is held open. You may feel pressure on your eye for about 30 seconds. Body movements will not affect the procedure, and your eye is held open.
After LASIK Surgery
The best medication following the surgery is sleep. The numbing drops used during surgery will start to wear off 2-3 hours after the procedure and you eyes may feel tender from the procedure. Sleep is the best way to avoid discomfort after LASIK.
Use your eye drops. After surgery, the nurse will give you eye drops to use. Using the prescription eye drops and preservative-free artificial tears will help soothe your eyes.
Post-op Check-Up is usually scheduled one day after your surgery. Dr. Lin will evaluate your vision and advise you on how to proceed.
Will LASIK interfere with my lifestyle?
Active sports should be postponed for two weeks or until the eye is fully healed, unless protective eyewear is approved by the surgeon. Swimming, hot tubs and saunas should be avoided for three weeks. After a full recovery, normal activity can resume, and the ability to play sports without glasses makes them more enjoyable for many patients.
Will insurance cover LASIK?
Generally, most insurance companies do not cover LASIK. Some special employee programs, however, do cover a certain percentage. Patients should inquire with their insurance representatives to determine benefits and coverage. Some patients enjoy significant tax savings by allocating funds for LASIK in their pre-tax medical expense account.
Many individuals choose Care Credit to finance LASIK. With CareCredit, there is 0% interest financing for up to 24 months. If you qualify for CareCredit, you may have your LASIK procedure now and pay for the balance with low monthly payments.
