OptiLight
Are you tired of having dry or itchy eyes that haven’t responded to other treatments?
If so, you may be well-suited for OptiLight. Pacific Eye Associates is excited to bring our patients the first and only light therapy for dry eyes.
What is OptiLight?
If you suffer from dry eyes, OptiLight is a new treatment available to help improve your tears. Dry eyes often occur if the tears produced are not high-quality or they are insufficient quality, leaving the eyes feeling dry and dehydrated.
OptiLight uses a device to emit pulses of light at a specific frequency and wavelength. The pulses of light stimulate the meibomian glands, which produce an oily layer of the tear film. The other 2 layers are a mucus and water layer. If any of these components are missing, the tears produced are not the correct composition.
The oily layer of the tear film helps prevent tears from evaporating from the eye’s surface too quickly. OptiLight addresses signs of dry eye syndrome due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). One of the most common signs associated with MGD is inflammation. OptiLight is the only light-based treatment that can reach the delicate areas of the treated areas safely and effectively, thanks to OPT technology.
OptiLight not only reduces inflammation in patients with dry eyes, but it also restores the proper function of the meibomian glands and keeps tears on the eye’s surface longer to delay evaporation of the tear film.
In addition to being used to treat dry eyes, OptiLight can also be used for treating discoloration and ocular rosacea.
Am I a Good Candidate for OptiLight?
Although OptiLight is a procedure that can bring many patients much-needed relief, it’s not meant for everyone. You may be a good candidate for OptiLight if:
- You’re at least 22 years old
- You’ve tried other dry eye treatments like prescription eye drops or artificial tears without seeing improvement in your symptoms
- You have ocular rosacea or discoloration
- You have no history of migraines, seizures, or epilepsy
- You haven’t undergone any eye surgeries or eyelid surgeries within six months of your first treatment
- You do not have an uncontrolled eye disorder that affects the surface of your eye
- You intend on undergoing OptiLight while using other available treatments like artificial tears, warm compresses, and meibomian gland expression to increase potential improvement

Is OptiLight Different from Other Procedures?
Yes, OptiLight is different from other procedures. OptiLight is the only light therapy for dry eyes.
Rather than using medications or undergoing invasive procedures, OptiLight is a minimally invasive treatment that can help treat inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction in patients with dry eyes. OptiLight can help patients struggling with symptoms find long-lasting relief and improve their quality of life.
Part of what sets OptiLight apart from other procedures is its patented Optimal Pulse Technology. OPT transforms how light is used into a targeted, uniform, precise, and highly controlled method of treating dry eyes.
OPT is designed to be used below the eyes. The area below the eyes is quite delicate, making reaching it more challenging. With OPT, OptiLight can efficiently break the cycle of inflammation caused by dry eyes and prevent it from beginning again.
What Should I Expect During the OptiLight Treatment?
During an OptiLight treatment at Pacific Eye Associates, we will begin by covering your eyes with shields. Next, we will apply a thin layer of coupling gel over the treatment area.
After applying the gel, we will begin the OptiLight treatment. The light will be applied to the skin below your eyes.
OptiLight is non-invasive and will not cause you any pain. Your skin may feel a warming sensation as the light is applied.
Most patients will require four sessions of OptiLight. These sessions should be spaced approximately two to four weeks apart for the best results. Each session only takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, so even patients with the busiest schedules should be able to find time to undergo OptiLight.
Is There Any Down Time After OptiLight?
No, there is no downtime after OptiLight, so you can return to your usual activities! You may notice some redness immediately after having OptiLight, but this should disappear within a few hours of treatment.
You must avoid direct sunlight for several days after each OptiLight treatment for optimal results. Remember to apply sunscreen as well, as your skin may be more sensitive after each treatment.
How Long Will It Be Before I See an Improvement?
Patients typically start seeing improvements after their second to third treatment. Even if you begin seeing improvements, four treatments are recommended to ensure you achieve the most optimal results.
Patients should undergo maintenance sessions every six to twelve months to ensure long-term results. Undergoing these maintenance sessions can help patients continue to see the results they want and feel comfortable.
